As Founder and Chief Motivating Office, LaToya Dwight created Pad The Pandemic after a life altering experience from uterine fibroids, non-cancerous tumors of the uterus. Roughly 70% of humans with a uterus will develop uterine fibroids. Of this population, 80% are Black.
In her early 30’s, LaToya learned she had fibroids during a routine OG/BYN visit to replace an IUD. After providing little information or guidance, LaToya’s doctor, of twelve years, recommended that she have a hysterectomy; it was the first and only option she was presented. LaToya declined the hysterectomy and decided to empower herself embarking on a four-year-long journey, and counting, of researching fibroids. During her fibroid healing journey, LaToya’s outlook on reproductive health drastically shifted after learning about the negative implications of period poverty and the detrimental impact that sanitary products have on the reproductive system.
Period poverty is the lack of access to safe, hygienic, toxic-free sanitary products, and the economic vulnerability one faces while trying to afford these menstrual products. 2-in-5 Americans suffer from period poverty. Whether it’s a high school student, attorney, police officer, college professor, store clerk, or community change maker, someone you know may suffer from period poverty. It’s a global pandemic that is unrecognized and not openly discussed. Pad The Pandemic aspires to invoke change with one mission – to eradicate period poverty and unnecessary hysterectomies one uterus at a time!
Dr. Ife Akinsheye Damon is a parent, grandparent, Doctor of Education, educator of educators, researcher, student, trainer, certified life coach, cancer survivor, Honorary Doctor of Divinity, mentor, motivational speaker, spiritual advisor, author, poet, artist, YouTuber, advocate, and activist who specializes in transforming individuals and organizations.
She earned an Associate of Science degree from Atlanta Metropolitan College, a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Georgia State University, a Master of Education degree from Walden University, a Specialist of Education degree from Walden University, and a Doctor of Educational Leadership and Administration degree from Gwynedd Mercy University.
With over 20 years of experience in the field of education, Dr. Ife was recognized as an American Education Hero by TIME Magazine, was on a National Press Foundation Panel with the US Secretary of Education, and has been featured in the NY Times, the Wall Street Journal, The 74 Million, the Staten Island Advance, and several other media outlets.
Dr. Ife is the Founder and CEO of The Community-Based Education Movement™ and as a community-based education advocate, she shows educators, students, and community partners how to collaborate to improve their communities. Her for-profit, CBE Consulting, and nonprofit, The Global Academy for Community-Based Education, Inc. (GACBE), both focus on bringing awareness to community-based education, providing extensive training, conducting ongoing research, and offering students a platform to showcase their community advocacy projects.
As a certified life coach, Dr. Ife works with people who may feel overwhelmed with all the demands of life by helping them focus on appreciating the gift of the present while healing pain from the past and strengthening visions for the future. Through mindset shifting and self-love development, Dr. Ife shows people that life can be full of love, excitement, abundance, and bliss!
